Steinaker Dam Right Abutment Modifications

The Steinaker Dam right abutment modifications are now complete. We express our profound appreciation to Weeminuche Construction Authority and the Bureau of Reclamation for expeditiously accomplishing this important project in behalf of Ashley Valley water users. We are currently filling the reservoir with winter streamflows diverted from Ashley Creek. As the reservoir level rises, District personnel will routinely monitor the dam's performance in accordance with Bureau of Reclamation guidelines. Due to filling restrictions and seasonal water deliveries, it is anticipated that the reservoir will fill to capacity in 2021. Please enjoy this drone footage compiled by Brig Thomas, Senior GIS Analyst with the Central Utah Water Conservancy District.

04/30/2020 UPDATE:  As required by the Bureau of Reclamation, Steinaker Reservoir is to be held for a period of three weeks at elevation 5483 +/- 3 feet.  This is done to evaluate the performance of the dam under pre-determined conditions following a major repair.  The reservoir entered this hold period on April 16th.  During this time, any inflows will be bypassed through the outlet works in order to maintain a constant reservoir elevation.  At the conclusion of the hold period (May 7th), dependent upon flows in Ashley Creek, the reservoir will be filled to the next hold elevation of 5500.

07/17/2020 UPDATE:  Steinaker Dam continues to perform as expected.  The initial hold at elevation 5483 was completed, however, we were not able to sustain the reservoir's elevation at 5500 +/- 3 feet for enough time (only 13 days of the required 4 weeks) to clear the second hold.  The reservoir reached its highest level at elevation 5498.95 on June 16.  Since that time, in order to meet irrigation water demands throughout the valley, the reservoir has been steadily declining.  Today's elevation is 5487.34.

06/04/2021 UPDATE:  On September 24, 2019, representatives of the District, the Bureau of Reclamation, and Weeminuche Construction performed a transfer inspection and final walk-through inspection of the Safety of Dams (SOD) modifications at Steinaker Dam. Reclamation and the District both concurred during a close-out meeting after the inspection that there are no deficiencies to address in the Steinaker Dam SOD Modification Project that would prevent transfer of O&M back to the District. Subsequent to the end of construction, a Risk Reduction Verification study was performed in November of 2020, and a Risk Reduction Verification Dam Safety Advisory Team (DSAT) meeting was held on Thursday April 29, 2021. This DSAT represents the final step of the Dam Safety Corrective Action for Steinaker Dam to address the upstream slope failure. As a result of this inspection and DSAT, transfer of Steinaker Dam from Asset Under Construction to Operation and Maintenance status by Uintah Water Conservancy District is effective as of April 29, 2021. The SOD modifications are now Substantially Complete, and repayment of the reimbursable SOD costs will commence in accordance with Article 7 of SOD Repayment Contract No. 18-SD-40-691.
